You can see Catholic saints as coaches or spiritual guides. They are the perfect example of a loving life, of humility and a willingness to serve. Many of the saints have had apparitions of the Virgin Mary, or of Jesus Christ. Think of Bernadette of Lourdes, the children of Fatima, or Saint Faustina. Since we assume they are in heaven, they are great intercessors for us. It is very inspiring to read about their lives.
